A few Comments
Making a website is not as easy as just going to the nearest free homepage server, writing a few lines in their automatic "home page maker" and adding 300k of your favorite pet pictures, or you and the love(s) of your life. Unless you are writing a page just for friends and family - in which case, yes, it is that easy, so go do it. A site is a bit different than just a page or two. When I first started doing sites, that was what I did. A few pages here and there. Then my first site got larger, and I really regretted not sitting down and planning it first.
Keep in mind something very important about the web. No matter what you do on your page, it will never look the same on everyone's screen. I have an older 15 inch monitor, I can run it a 1024 by 768, but only if I go from 16 million colors down to 256. My coworker has a brand new 17 inch monitor and a great video card. Do you really think your page will look the same on both even with the same fonts and so forth? Not a chance. So, if you never remember anything else, remember this. A web page looks the way the viewer wants, not the way the writer wants. The wise writer will write in such a way that it looks good to as many people as possible, rather than trying to make it look "just so" on the writer's system. Plan for that - and you can have a lot of fun doing it - it's very freeing to just let things flow.
This area and the rest of the site are continually under construction, (what site isn't). It will be updated constantly as I find new things, and remember things I forgot to include. So far, what I've t done on web sites is the following:
- basic planning, how to organize a site for easy navigation, and graceful growth
- How to write HTML, with some hints and tips, and lots of links and recommendations
- how to deal with Cascading Style Sheets
- Common Gateway Interface(CGI), or programs that more polite than Javascript
- where to get Domains and web hosting (cheap)
- and other stuff, including graphics, sound, and other things handy for livening up a webpage. Also includes everything I can't find another place for!
