Expatriates reference

I started out to build a travel site - then discovered that there were thousands of others doing the same thing. So I changed my mind. What I did was try to think of all the things that I missed when living abroad, and things others missed. Along with that, things that I missed from abroad when I got back home. The two things I was most likely to long for were "comfort foods" and books that weren't on the airport bookshelves.

I went hunting on the Internet, and managed to catch a few interesting creatures. Among them was a UK food store for homesick British expatriates, that ships all sorts of strange stuff anywhere in the world (haggis anyone?). I found several bookstores that are much cheaper than Amazon and Barnes and Noble. With the shipping charges being so high, getting the books at a good discount at least helps balance things out. I also found a place that lets you download classics (no longer copyrighted books and stories) for free. You would have to print them or read them off the computer, but it's better than not having them at all. I also ran across a number of other things I had not previously thought of, such as online education, job sites that post international jobs, and freelance "work from anywhere" jobs.

I was amazed at how many companies I found with the words "international" or "world-wide" in their names, that would not ship outside of their own country. This was most prevalent in US companies. Some of them wouldn't even ship to Hawaii. There are times when I'm a bit disgusted with my own countrymen. I have managed to some enlightened companies in the US and elsewhere, and of course, am not listing most of the unenlightened ones. I've made an exception for some food companies if the area they ship to is not the native country of the type of food they ship (for instance, Thai food in the US).

I'll also be attempting the ambitious project of linking as many online local newspapers that I can find, from all over the world. This one may take a while, and if you have a link to your hometown newspaper, wherever that may be, and or a link to newspapers where you live now, please send me the URL, it will speed things up!

Anyone who has found good non-English sites for expats, please send me the link, and a brief explanation of the site. If you review it also, in your language, I'll post it as-is (after I translate enough to be sure you aren't playing tricks). If your language uses a totally different alphabet, please send me a link to the font you use.
