Expatriates

I started out to build a travel site - then discovered that there were thousands of others doing the same thing. So I changed my mind. What I did was try to think of all the things that I missed when living abroad, and things others missed. Along with that, things that I missed from abroad when I got back home. The two things I was most likely to long for were "comfort foods" and books that weren't on the airport bookshelves. Also, a bit of extra cash to buy them!

I went hunting on the Internet, and managed to catch a few interesting creatures. Among them were a UK food store for homesick British expatriates (haggis or Gentleman's relish, anyone?), several bookstores that are much cheaper than Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and a number of international job sites. I also found a place that lets you download classic novels (no longer copyrighted books and stories) for free. You would have to print them or read them off the computer, but it's better than not having them at all. I also ran across a number of other things I had not previously thought of., such as distance graduate degrees, learning sites for kids, local news and many others.

I was amazed at how many companies I found with the words "international" or "world-wide" in their names, that would not ship outside of their own country. This was most prevalent in US companies. Some of them won't even ship to Hawaii. There are times when I'm a bit disgusted with my own countrymen. I have managed to find some enlightened companies in the US and elsewhere and am not listing most of the unenlightened ones. I've made an exception for some food companies if the area they ship to is not the native country for the type of food they ship ( Thai food in the US; as an example).

I'll also be attempting the ambitious project of linking as many online local newspapers that I can find, from all over the world. This one may take a while, and if you have a link to your hometown newspaper, wherever that may be, and or a link to newspapers where you live now, please send me the URL, it will speed things up!

Anyone who has found good non-English sites for expats, please send me the link, and a brief explanation of the site. If you review it also, in your language, I'll post it as-is (after I translate enough to be sure you aren't playing tricks). If your language uses a totally different alphabet than English, please send me a link to the font you use.
